Binge Drinking: 2011
More than 15% of the U.S. population has engaged in binge drinking in the last 30 days. Binge drinking if defined as 5 or more drinks for a man or 4 or more drinks for a woman in a short period of time.
Binge Drinking measures the percentage of the population over age 18 that drank excessively in the last 30 days. The ranks are based on Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System self-report data. Binge Drinking is measured over a two-year span to increase the reliability of estimates and to allow better state-to-state comparisons.
Binge drinking has an adverse effect on health due to the impact of excessive alcohol on increased motor vehicle injuries and deaths, increased aggression, unintentional injury, fetal damage and liver diseases along with other health risks (see http://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/). It is a proxy indicator for excessive drug and alcohol use within a population.
The measures tracked by America's Health Rankings are those actions that can
affect the future health of the population. For a state to improve the health of
its population, efforts must focus on these measures, these determinants of health.
