Cardiovascular Deaths: 2011
The number of deaths due to all cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and strokes, has declined since 1990. It’s important to note, however, that even though mortality rates are declining, many individuals are living with chronic cardiac disease as new procedures prolong their lives.
You can prevent cardiovascular disease by leading a healthy lifestyle that includes being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, eating well and not using tobacco.
Cardiovascular Deaths measures the three-year average, age-adjusted number of deaths attributed to cardiovascular diseases, including but not limited to heart disease and stroke, per 100,000 population. The ranks, based on National Center for Health Statistics data.
In the United States, heart disease and stroke are currently the leading and fifth most common cause of death, respectively. To reduce this burden, Million Hearts, a new national initiative to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years, was recently established.
The measures tracked by America's Health Rankings are those actions that can
affect the future health of the population. For a state to improve the health of
its population, efforts must focus on these measures, these determinants of health.
