People without private or public health insurance have greater difficulty accessing the health care system, frequently are unable to participate in preventive care programs and can add substantially to the overall cost of health care.

Lack of Health Insurance measures the percentage of the population not covered by private or public health insurance. The ranks are a two year average based on data from U.S. Census Bureau Current Population Survey, Annual Social and Economic Supplements, Washington, D.C.
