Freedom from Smoking is a program designed by the American Lung Association that has been helping adults who are ready to quit smoking since 1981. Most people know that smoking is bad for their health, so the program's main focus is on how to quit because participants often have their own reasons for wanting to quit. Freedom from smoking is a group clinic taught by an ALA trained facilitator that meets for eight sessions. They also offer a web-based program available 24 -7. Participants benefit from the support of their peers and the classes review the latest research on the variety nicotine replacement therapies, such as gums and patches, as well as other smoking cessation medications. In addition to the clinic, ALA has a workbook-style Freedom from Smoking self-help manual that can provide additional reinforcement, motivation and information that might help smokers interested in quitting on their journey. To find local clinics, interested parties can call the ALA, and employers or community organizations can also arrange to host a clinic to promote the health of their staff or members. ... | Read More

MaineHealth created The Health Index Program to measure the progress in improving the health status of the people who reside in the 11 counties of the MaineHealth service area. The Index tracks progress on six key priorities that are linked to community health status:tobacco use, obesity, childhood immunizations, preventable hospitalizations, cancer deaths, and cardiovascular deaths. The Health Index has become a strategic framework for developing and evaluating the impact of initiatives across the system, including targeted activities such as colorectal cancer screenings for low income patients as well as cost cutting initiatives, such as implementation of electronic medical records that produce accurate immunization reports. ... | Read More

Louisiana Takes Action

Louisiana is one of the most resilient states in the nation, with a rich, unique culture and history, and a dynamic populace. Unfortunately, Louisianans have poor health overall as evidenced by its consistently low ranking among all states in America’s Health Rankings. Again this year, Louisiana is ranked 49th, consistent with their ranking since 1990.
Live Well STL

With support from United Health Foundation and the National Business Coalition on Health (NBCH), the St. Louis Area Business Health Coalition together with the Midwest Health Initiative, developed Live Well STL, a shared community plan to support St. Louis area residents in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
Built off two nationally recognized frameworks for assessing health status, including America’s Health Rankings, MaineHealth’s Health Index Initiative was developed as a first step toward creating a unique platform to support MaineHealth’s vision of working together so that Maine’s communities are the healthiest in America.
