Occupational Fatalities: 2011
Occupational fatalities is the combined rate of fatal injuries in the construction, manufacturing, trade, transportation, utilities, professional, and business services and represents the impact of hazardous jobs on the population. They are measured over a three-year span because of their low incidence rate.
Rather than using an occupational fatality rate for all workers, this industry-adjusted rate is used to account for the different industry mixes in each state in order to accurately reflect the safety differences between the states. The ranks are based on occupational fatality data from Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Washington, D.C. The industry population data used to calculate rates was based on 2010 data collected from the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
The measures tracked by America's Health Rankings are those actions that can
affect the future health of the population. For a state to improve the health of
its population, efforts must focus on these measures, these determinants of health.
