Iowa (2009)

America’s Health Rankings™
Ranking:
Iowa is 15th this year; it was 16th in 2008.

Strengths:
Strengths include a high rate of high school graduation with 86.9 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years, a low rate of uninsured population at 9.4 percent, a low infant mortality rate at 5.2 deaths per 1,000 live births and few poor mental and physical health days per month at 2.8 days and 3.1 days in the previous 30 days, respectively.

Challenges:
Challenges include a high prevalence of binge drinking at 20.1 percent of the population and limited availability of primary care physicians with 83.9 primary care physicians per 100,000 population. Iowa ranks lower for determinants than for health outcomes, indicating that overall healthiness may decline over time.

Significant Changes:
In the past year, public health funding increased from $45 to $51 per person. In the past five years, the prevalence of smoking decreased from 21.7 percent to 18.7 percent of the population. In the past ten years, immunization coverage increased from 47.7 percent to 77.3 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations. Since 1990, the prevalence of obesity increased from 12.8 percent to 26.7 percent of the population.

Health Disparities:
In Iowa, smoking is more prevalent among non-Hispanic blacks at 34.8 percent than non-Hispanic whites at 19.5 percent. Mortality rates vary by race and ethnicity in Iowa, with 1,000.9 deaths per 100,000 population among blacks compared to whites, who experience 755.0 deaths per 100,000 population.
