Ranking:
Maryland is 21st this year; it was 22nd in 2008.

Strengths:
Strengths include a low prevalence of smoking at 14.9 percent of the population, ready availability of primary care physicians with 179.7 primary care physicians per 100,000 population, a low percentage of children in poverty at 10.0 percent of persons undaer age 18, high immunization coverage with 82.6 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations and strong public health funding at $118 per person. Maryland ranks higher for determinants than for health outcomes, indicating that overall healthiness should improve over time.

Challenges:
Challenges include a high incidence of infectious disease at 35.3 cases per 100,000 population, a high violent crime rate at 628 offenses per 100,000 population and high levels of air pollution at 12.6 micrograms of fine particulate per cubic meter.

Significant Changes:
In the past year, immunization coverage decreased from 92.4 percent to 82.6 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations. In the past five years, the prevalence of smoking decreased from 20.1 percent to 14.9 percent of the population. In the past ten years, the rate of cancer deaths decreased from 220.4 to 198.5 deaths per 100,000 population. Since 1990, the prevalence of obesity increased from 12.0 percent to 26.6 percent of the population.

Health Disparities:
In Maryland, obesity is more prevalent among non-Hispanic blacks at 35.2 percent than non-Hispanic whites at 23.8 percent. The prevalence of diabetes also varies by race and ethnicity in the state; 11.4 percent of non-Hispanic blacks have diabetes compared to 7.5 percent of non-Hispanic whites. In addition, mortality rates vary in Maryland, with 994.0 deaths per 100,000 population among blacks compared to whites, who experience786.7 deaths per 100,000 population.
