Highlights:

  • In the past year, the prevalence of smoking decreased from 19.1 percent to 16.5 percent of the adult population; however, nearly 90,000 adults still smoke in Vermont.
  • The prevalence of binge drinking increased in the past year from 18.5 percent to 19.3 percent of adults.
  • In the past year, the incidence of pertussis increased from 2.9 to 15.1 cases per 100,000 population.
  • In the past 5 years, the percentage of children in poverty increased from 10.9 percent to 17.0 percent of persons younger than 18 years.
  • In the past year, the percentage of uninsured population decreased from 9.0 percent to 7.8 percent of the population.
  • In the past 10 years, the rate of cardiovascular deaths decreased by 34 percent from 295.8 to 220.8 deaths per 100,000 population.

 

Disparities:

  • In Vermont, 61.7 percent of adults aged 25 years and older with at least a high school education report their health is very good or excellent compared to only 30.9 percent with less than a high school education, resulting in a gap of 30.8 percent.
