Mississippi is 50th this year, unchanged from 2008.
Strengths:
Strengths include a low prevalence of binge drinking at 11.1 percent
of the population and a low violent crime rate at 285 offenses per 100,000 population.
Challenges:
Mississippi is among the bottom five states on 10 of the 22 measures.
Challenges include a high prevalence of obesity at 33.3 percent of the population,
a high percentage of children in poverty at 23.5 percent of persons under age 18,
a low high school graduation rate with 63.5 percent of incoming ninth graders who
graduate within four years, a high infant mortality rate at 11.0 deaths per 1,000
live births and a high rate of deaths from cardiovascular disease at 378.5 deaths
per 100,000 population.
Significant Changes:
In the past year, the percentage of children in poverty decreased from 32.8 percent
to 23.5 percent of persons under age 18.
In the past five years, the incidence of infectious disease declined from 26.9 to
17.2 cases per 100,000 population.
In the past ten years, immunization coverage increased from 38.1 percent to 76.5
percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations.
Since 1990, the prevalence of obesity increased from 15.0 percent to 33.3 percent
of the population.
Health Disparities:
In Mississippi, obesity is more prevalent among non-Hispanic blacks
at 41.0 percent than non-Hispanic whites at 28.2 percent. The prevalence of diabetes
also varies by race and ethnicity in the state; 13.5 percent of non-Hispanic blacks
have diabetes compared to 10.0 percent of non-Hispanic whites. In addition, mortality
rates vary in Mississippi, with 1,145.4 deaths per 100,000 population among blacks
compared to whites, who experience 937.8 deaths per 100,000 population.
