The Behaviors category represents practices that impact health and are influenced by individual, community, system and policy factors. Topics in this category are Sleep Health, Sexual Health, Smoking and Tobacco Use, and Nutrition and Physical Activity. Some of the measures in this category include insufficient sleep, teen births, smoking, and fruit and vegetable consumption.

Behaviors is one of five categories of measures used in the America’s Health Rankings model. The other four categories are Social and Economic Factors, Physical Environment, Clinical Care and Health Outcomes. This model is built upon the World Health Organization’s definition of health: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The model reflects that determinants of health directly influence health outcomes.
