Per capita income is the total income of a population divided by the number of people in that population. This measure shows the relative wealth of a state or nation. Individuals with low household incomes have lower life expectancy and higher rates of disease than people in higher-income households.
Additionally, poverty can cause chronic stress, which is associated with a multitude of health issues, including depression, digestive issues, high blood pressure and sleep problems.

Reducing the unemployment rate and increasing worker wages are strategies that may increase median household income. Creating awareness of government support initiatives such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can help those with lower incomes access healthy food and save money.
