The Physical Environment category represents where individuals live, work and play, and their interaction with this space. Topics in this category are Air and Water Quality, Housing and Transit, and Climate and Health. Measures include air pollution, severe housing problems and renewable energy.

Physical Environment is one of five categories of measures used in the America’s Health Rankings model. The other four categories are Social and Economic Factors, Clinical Care, Behaviors and Health Outcomes. This model is built upon the World Health Organization’s definition of health: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The model reflects that determinants of health directly influence health outcomes.
