The Social and Economic Factors category represents the broader impact that society and the economy have on an individual or community’s ability to make healthy choices. Topics in this category are Community and Family Safety, Education, Economic Resources, and Social Support and Engagement. Some of the measures in this category include occupational fatalities, high school completion, income inequality and voter participation.
Social and Economic Factors is one of five categories of measures used in the America’s Health Rankings model. The other four categories are Physical Environment, Behaviors, Clinical Care and Health Outcomes. This model is built upon the World Health Organization’s definition of health: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The model reflects that determinants of health directly influence health outcomes.
America’s Health Rankings builds on the work of the United Health Foundation to draw attention to public health and better understand the health of various populations. Our platform provides relevant information that policymakers, public health officials, advocates and leaders can use to effect change in their communities.
